Summer Coolers Part TWO

Summers are here. And how. After a gorgeous spell of rains last week. Living in a house on the top floor can be killing, espcially for people like Singh who want the air conditioning on all the time if they are home!

Can’t blame him. The heat can toast you well in 15 minutes. And this is just mid April. So keeping yourself hydrated is important. Try these for quenching your thirst and replenishing the system with electrolytes.



– Wash 4 raw mangoes very well and pressure cook them in little water. One whistle and then a low flame for 3 minutes is good.

– Open the cooker and let the liquid cool.

– Peel the mangoes and scrape out all the flesh. Do not throw away the water.

– Grind together the mango pulp, a cup of mint leaves, 1 green chilly, and 3 teaspoons of brown sugar (shakkar).

– Add this pulp mixture to the boiled water from pressure cooking, stir in a little black salt (kala namak), roasted cumin powder (bhuna jeera) and black pepper powder (kali mirch).

– You may store this in a bottle and keep it in the fridge for about 5 days.

– Dilute the mix with a little water before drinking!


– Wash one bael fruit well and crack it – hand or stick is your choice!

– Soak the fruit in a large bowl with enough drinking water to sink it fully.

– After about an hour or so, open the shell and  scrape out the flesh, mashing it well with your fingers.

– Strain the pulp and add a little water.

– You may keep this in a bottle in the fridge for upto 4 days.

– Add a little brown sugar and a few crushed mint leaves before drinking.
